Beat the Heat

Beat the Heat

As summer heats up, it's crucial to prioritize the well-being of our beloved horses and ensure they stay cool and comfortable. Rising temperatures can pose risks such as heat stress and dehydration, but with the right care and precautions, we can help our equine companions beat the heat. In this blog post, we will share some of our favorite tips to keep your horses cool and happy during the scorching summer months.

Hydration is Key

One of the most important aspects of summer horse care is providing ample access to clean, fresh water. Ensure your horse has a constant supply of water in clean troughs or buckets. Regularly check and clean water sources to maintain optimal hygiene. Encourage your horse to drink by adding electrolytes to their water or offering wet, soaked feeds. If you are choosing to soak your feed make sure it is not sitting in the heat. Wet feed can expire very quickly when left in a hot environment.

Purina Hydration Hay & Electrolytes

In addition to providing water and maintaining hydration, offering refreshing treats can be a delightful way to help your horse beat the heat. One such option is Purina Hydration Hay, a specially designed product that can provide additional moisture and hydration to your equine friend.

Purina Hydration Hay is a unique blend of premium grass hay and a moisture-activated hydration pellet. This combination not only provides essential fiber but also encourages increased water consumption. The hydration pellets are designed to absorb water, releasing it as your horse eats the hay. This innovative treat can be an excellent addition to your horse's summer routine, helping to ensure they stay hydrated, even during hot and dry weather.

Timing is Everything

Adjust your riding schedule to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Plan your rides for early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are cooler. This helps prevent overheating and reduces the risk of heat-related illnesses. Take advantage of the peaceful twilight hours to enjoy rides with your horse while keeping them comfortable. It's important to keep this in mind when planning your races/rodeos, avoid going to races where you have to haul in the middle of the day.

Adjust Exercise and Workload

During hot summer days, it's important to modify your horse's exercise routine. Reduce the intensity and duration of workouts to avoid excessive exertion. Opt for lighter exercise, such as trail rides or lunging sessions, during cooler parts of the day. Listen to your horse's cues and be mindful of signs of fatigue or overheating.

Refreshing Baths

Frequent baths can provide instant relief from the heat. Treat your horse to refreshing showers, focusing on areas where they tend to accumulate heat, such as the neck, chest, and legs.  After bathing, scrape off excess water to prevent prolonged dampness and let the cooling. At the Josey Ranch we like to use the E-zall system to give our horses quick baths with natural ingredients.

Provide Shade, Shelter, and Fans

Provide ample shade and shelter options in your horse's living area. Trees, shade cloths, or well-ventilated stables offer a cool retreat from the sun's intense rays. Create a comfortable environment that allows your horse to escape the direct heat and relax in a shaded spot. Ensure proper ventilation to promote air circulation and reduce heat buildup. If you have the ability to hang fans to help with circulation this is a great way to help your horses stay cool.

By implementing these tips, you can ensure your horses stay cool, comfortable, and healthy throughout the summer season. Prioritize hydration, provide shade and shelter, and adjust exercise routines to prevent heat-related issues. Remember to be observant and responsive to your horse's needs, as individual horses may have different tolerances to heat. With proper care and attention, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable summer with your equine athletes.

Keep your horses cool, and let them thrive in the summer sun!
